George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin make their union legal with 10-minute ... - Daily Mail

It's had all the drama of one of his signature Hollywood blockbusters.

And George Clooney ensured that his four-day Venetian wedding had the happiest of endings today as his marriage to British barrister Amal Alamuddin was finally made official in a 10-minute, €600 civil ceremony in the Italian city.

As the credits began to roll on proceedings, which had started on Friday afternoon, there was still time for one last scene to play out as the 53-year-old actor and his new wife arrived at Venice City Hall to complete formalities and sign the wedding register in front of witnesses.

Once again, the pair made a show-stopping entrance after sweeping down the Grande Canal and making their way to the historic Ca' Loredan building which houses the city hall.

Amal dazzled in yet another fashionable ensemble, wide-legged Stella McCartney cream trousers with a matching top and hat.

She also carried a clutch by the same designer.

Although Mr Clooney's spokesman in Los Angeles had declared that the couple had married on Saturday night, to make the union legal under Italian law they were still required to to turn up for a civil ceremony.

They paid the €600/ £470 600 fee charged by the Municipality of Venice to non-Italians who want to wed in the city, and proceedings were conducted in the glitzy Sala degli Stucchi reception room.

The city's council had closed of the streets around the 13th century city hall building, bringing a small part of the area near to the famous Rialto Bridge to a virtual standstill as the newlyweds arrived at the venue in a chauffeur-driven taxi boat flanked by police boats.

The couple's arrival took place just as angry council workers were staging an angry protest outside the neighbouring Ca' Farsetti building over budget and salary cuts.

Council employees, who earn on average 2,500 euros a month, are about to have their salaries cut by 500 euros.

The move comes after the mayor of Venice was forced to resign as a result of a multi-million pound corruption scandal earlier this year.

Protesters had been hoping that Mr Clooney, who has been outspoken on issues such as the war and famine in Darfur, may help publicise their grievances.

Council workers have even sent an open letter to Mr Clooney, addressing him as 'Caro (dear) George', and explaining that while they were happy that he had chosen Venice for his wedding, he should know that unemployment was on the rise and families were struggling to make ends meet.

Under the gaze of the world's media, the small group of gathered protesters whistled and chanted and held up placards as officials began turning up ahead of Mr Clooney's and Ms Alamuddin's arrival.

Their protests however were mostly drowned out by crowds of tourists who had arrived at the city hall to congratulate and cheer on the newlyweds.

However, Mr Clooney appeared to acknowledge the protesters as he stopped and briefly applauded those holding placards before heading inside.

The couple tied the knot beneath an arch made of white roses, during a ceremony presided over by Walter Veltroni, a former mayor of Rome whom Mr Clooney befriended through his humanitarian work.

It's believed US Vogue has secured the rights to the wedding pictures and the couple will be donating the fee they receive to a charity of their choice. The pair reportedly banned guests from bringing mobile phones in a bid to prevent unauthorised pictures being leaked from the event.

The civil ceremony came two days after the Hollywood star and human rights barrister Ms Alamuddin, 36, exchanged vows in a celebrity-packed wedding at the seven-star Aman Hotel.

TMZ also claims the Gravity actor devised a cunning plan which enabled punters to take photos, which he could monitor. According to the website, guests were given a specially made camera and code.

On Monday morning, the couple's celebrity friends who had spent the weekend celebrating their wedding, began leaving Venice.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Randy Gerber, who acted as Mr Clooney's best man, were among the first to arrive at the city's Marco Polo airport. They were followed by actor Matt Damon and his wife Luciana.

Meanwhile, now he's a married man, the pressure is on George to start a family with his stunning wife Amal .

Just hours after getting hitched, her father Ramzi Alamuddin reportedly made his feelings pretty clear on the subject at the wedding reception.

'Now it's time for grandchildren,' he announced during his speech, according to US Weekly.

After the short ceremony at the city hall in Venice, the actor and his wife were taken by water taxi straight to Venice's Marco Polo airport to travel back to London. The couple are now expected to jet off once again to spend their honeymoon in Marrakech.

Following his father-in-law's speech, messages from a few of George's pals, including Dan Aykroyd and Sandra Bullock, who sadly couldn't make it to his big day, were then read aloud, putting a smile on the actor's face.

According to the magazine, the wedding celebrations went on until the early hours of Sunday morning, with some not retiring to their beds until 5am.

It will no doubt come as a surprise to some that George had the energy to party so hard as he'd had a late night the evening before celebrating his last hours as a single man.

The actor and a few of his closest pals were spotted dining out at one of his favourite eateries Da Ivo restaurant, where they feasted on a gourmet dinner of stuffed courgette flowers, pasta with truffles before tucking into figs, crab and lobster.

After the meal, George and his pals, including best man Rande Gerber and producing partner Grant Heslov, reportedly devoured two bottles of Casamigos - his own brand of tequila - before moving on to Sassicaia.

They are also said to have enjoyed a £250 bottle of Tuscan red wine.

Despite the stag party no doubt feeling slightly tipsy after spending the evening indulging in alcohol, the restaurant's chef Luciana Gambardella couldn't stop gushing about the 53-year-old star.

'He's a wonderful person,' she beamed to The Independent on Sunday.

According to the restaurant's owner Giovanni Fracassi, who is an old friend of George's, the Hollywood pin-up didn't leave empty handed either.

Having known the actor for almost a decade, he gave his pal thousands of pounds worth of vintage 2010 Sassicaia red wine - which costs up to £250 a bottle - as a wedding present.

To say thank you, George scribbled a note on an empty bottle stating that he'd had 'the perfect night'.

Giovanni now proudly has it on display at his restaurant, which will no doubt bring back fond memories to the actor the next time he stops by.

Talking about the big night, the restaurant owner revealed: 'It was a low-key celebration, but they said that they had a great time.

George was seen laughing and smiling with his companions before he began to speak with a photographer nearby. When being congratulated on his wedding, George joked: 'I'm not getting married'.

Curiously, the actor appeared to clutch a gift wrapped object as he departed with his two friends some time later.

The Hollywood star looked fresh-faced despite his late night out the night before which saw him spend his final night as a single man downing tequila shots and vintage red wine with his groomsmen.

During the meal the group were presented with thousands of pounds worth of vintage 2010 Sassicaia red wine, which costs up to £250 a bottle - a wedding present from restaurant owner Giovanni Fracassi.

His best man, Rande, had also brought several bottles of tequila, which the group enjoyed after their dinner at the exclusive eatery.

He dated John Travolta's now-wife Kelly Preston for 14 months between 1987 and 1989, and is said to have been heartbroken that she dumped him for Charlie Sheen.

George then entered into his most serious romance (up until Amal) with fellow actress Talia Balsam.

Talia had actually dated George for three years before Kelly, and got back together two years later before driving to Vegas in a Winnebago to tie the knot. But after three years the couple divorced amid reports of arguments about money.

Clooney admitted in a Vanity Fair interview: 'I probably – definitely – wasn't someone who should have been married at that point. I just don't feel like I gave Talia a fair shot.'

Talia went on to marry Mad Men star John Slatterly, while George's next girlfriend was actress Kimberly Russell.

He dumped her in 1995 (by letter rather than face-to-face) allegedly because he wanted to see other women and take advantage of his blossoming fame after starring in TV drama ER.

They dated on and off for five years though Lisa never moved into his Los Angeles home. Having met on the set of a Martini commercial in 2000, and the final three years were said to be angst-filled.

However, Lisa became one of the rare ladies in his life to send him packing rather than the other way round.

But the search was over for George, who found the one to call his wife in 36-year old Amal.
